San Ramón Highlands, Alajuela · Cloud forest · 1,100–1,400 m
Cool mountain air, coffee country going quiet, an hour from the airport.
The hills above San Ramón are the closest real forest to San José that still has cheap land. Small coffee farms are being broken up as families move to town, leaving 1–3 hectare parcels along ridgelines with valley views, spring water, and morning mist. Temperatures sit in the low 20s °C year-round. You're 55 minutes from the international airport and 25 from a full hospital, but the last kilometre is birdsong and not much else.
- Spring-fed water on most parcels
- Cool enough to sleep without A/C
- Paved access to within ~1 km of most lots
- Toucans, quetzals, and a lot of fog
